About the book

Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other

Technology has become the architect of our intimacies. Online, we fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends, and confusing tweets and wall posts with authentic communication. But this relentless connection leads to a deep solitude. MIT professor Sherry Turkle argues that as technology ramps up, our emotional lives ramp down. Based on hundreds of interviews and with a new introduction taking us to the present day, Alone Together describes changing, unsettling relationships between friends, lovers, and families.

About Sherry Turkle

What do we lose when we spend more time talking to machines than to each other? Sherry Turkle has been answering that question since before most organizations knew to ask it. She was among the first scientists to examine AI as it was being created. Turkle has been profiled in The New York Times, Scientific American and WIRED, has appeared at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting and Talks at Google and her TED Talk "Connected, but alone?" has been viewed more than 6 million times.

Her books chart the arc of our life with screens. Alone Together sounded an early warning about the human costs of too much digital communication. Reclaiming Conversation made the case for face-to-face talk as "the most human thing we do."
